In the terrifying summer of 1942 in Belgium, when the Nazis began the brutal roundup of Jewish families, parents searched desperately for safe haven for their children. As Suzanne Vromen reveals in Hidden Children of the Holocaust, these children found sanctuary with other families and schools--but especially in Roman Catholic convents and orphanages. Vromen has interviewed not only those who were hidden as children, but also the Christian women who rescued them, and the nuns who gave the children shelter, all of whose voices are heard in this powerfully moving book. Indeed, here are numerous first-hand memoirs of life in a wartime convent--the secrecy, the humor, the admiration, the anger, the deprivation, the cruelty, and the kindness--all with the backdrop of the terror of the Nazi occupation. We read the stories of the women of the Resistance who risked their lives in placing Jewish children in the care of the Church, and of the Mothers Superior and nuns who sheltered these children and hid their identity from the authorities. Perhaps most riveting are the stories told by the children themselves--abruptly separated from distraught parents and given new names, the children were brought to the convents with a sense of urgency, sometimes under the cover of darkness. They were plunged into a new life, different from anything they had ever known, and expected to adapt seamlessly. Vromen shows that some adapted so well that they converted to Catholicism, at times to fit in amid the daily prayers and rituals, but often because the Church appealed to them. Face à un adversaire auquel la force permet tout, il n'y a qu'une réponse possible : s'efforcer de réduire ses prétentions, de retarder leur réalisation. Cette politique, qui n'est pas collaboration, mais recherche du moindre mal, a été pratiquée avec succès par le cardinal Van Roey et l'épiscopat belge en 1940 et dans les années qui suivirent. C'est l'essentiel de cet ouvrage basé sur une abondante documentation inédite qui comprend, notamment, les importantes archives de guerre de l'archevêché de Malines que l'auteur a eu, le premier, le privilège de consulter. Dans la Belgique de 1940, terre d'élection du catholicisme politique, l'Eglise catholique bénéficie d'une situation politico-juridique privilégiée. Elle n'a donc aucun compte à régler avec le régime et aucune raison d'accueillir son changement éventuel comme une "divine surprise". Il reste que, comme l'histoire le montre, l'Eglise s'adapte à tout régime dont elle estime qu'il respecte suffisamment ses droits et, au cours de l'étrange été" de 1940, elle envisagera de s'adapter à l'Ordre nouveau. Le cardinal recevra Degrelle avec lequel il se déclarera prêt à "marcher", même dans la perspective de l'instauration d'un régime autoritaire, à condition que cela se fasse sous l'égide du roi et dans le respect des droits de la religion. Mais le "flirt" ne durera guère. Dès la fin de 1940, on en sera au stade de la guerre ouverte entre la hiérarchie et le mouvement rexiste. Avec l'occupant, par contre, l'Eglise établira un modus vivendi qui durera jusqu'à la fin de la guerre et lui permettra de défendre ses intérêts en évitant les provocations, mais aussi les compromissions. Alain DANTOING est né à Ottignies en 1950. Licencié en histoire de l'Université Catholique de Louvain en 1973, il est assistant au Centre de recherches et d'études historiques de la Seconde Guerre mondiale depuis 1976 et secrétaire de rédaction des Cahiers d'histoire de la Seconde Guerre mondiale, il a publié des articles sur les travailleurs belges dans les mines du Pas-de-Calais à la fin du 19e siècle, La hiérarchie catholique et la Belgique sous l'occupation (1978), La vie religieuse sous l'occupation (1984), Eglise et syndicat en 1940, Les avatars d'une politique de présence (1985) et L'Affaire Poulet (1986). Depuis son entrée au Centre, il s'est spécialisé dans l'étude de la collaboration intellectuelle francophone et de l'Eglise catholique pendant la guerre.
